Bathroom Makeover Pt3 - Medicine Cabinet

Bathroom Makeover Pt3 - Medicine Cabinet

Before you get TOO sick of hearing about my bathroom, at least I assume you're not as excited about it as I am, I want to leave you with the final installment.

The medicine cabinet is a builder grade oak number that had three mirror doors inset
which made the sagging shelves inside too narrow to be used for many things we wanted to keep there - like normal sized product bottles, etc.

Above were obnoxious "flame" shaped clear lightbulbs wired to a flip switch on the wall.

I researched lighting, new cabinets, etc. And once again, decided that paint and a little bit of building was going to be best and most economical.

After first looking at Ana White's (my first stop for building plans and how-to, like girls' Learning Tower) I decided to build new doors.

I built a basic frame and cross bar out of scraps using our pocket hole jig. It's an amazingly useful tool if you want to build things. I then attached a piece of rough scrap plywood to the back. Primed, painted, dug through the spare parts bins until I found four matching hinges and put them up.

I had to loosen the hinges slightly and add felt pads to the corners so the paint wouldn't stick and the doors would lay flat. Add in magnetic door catches, new lightbulbs and a dimmer switch, and voila!

So much better!

Although I will miss someone asking to see lots and lots of herselfs. :)

Total cost: $56.57

The exact hardware etc. I used are available in my Amazon aStore. (Any purchases through this link pay me a small commission at no extra cost to you. Thank you for supporting this site!)

All together making over the bathroom cost less than $175, and much of that was tools which I can use again or supplies I haven't used up.

Every little thing we do makes this house feel more like our own and makes it feel even more like home.

Now I just have to wait for this heat to break and I can tackle the next project!

  1. The bathroom looks GREAT! Comparing it to what it looked like when you first moved in, it looks FABULOUS! Each time you do another little piece, it just gets even more better. You've done a terrific job, my dear darling daughter.
