Homemade Cheese Popcorn - SaturDIY April 1st, 2017

-

First of all, this popcorn is no joke.

It's DELICIOUS.

Our girls love cheese popcorn, cheese puffs, and more.

I'm not a huge fan of the extra ingredients, the price, and certainly not the large plastic bag that will sit in the landfill forever. Our snacks are not that important.

Here's a Closer to Zero option, additive free, and delicious for those crunchy-cheese-snack cravings.

Ingredients:

Cheese
Popcorn
Oil/Butter
Salt (optional)

We used the girls' favorite ColbyJack cheese from our local coop but have tried it with parmesan. Let me know if you try another kind of cheese!

Tools/equipment
Dehydrator or oven
Food processor or high end blender

Directions:

1.) Grate the cheese and dehydrate it until it's crunchy - just like making parmesan crisps.

If you don't have a dehydrator, you can use a cookie sheet in the oven at its coolest setting - ours goes down to 170f

2.) Once it's crunchy and dried, put the crunchy cheese in a food processor (or high end blender) until powdered. My food processor is older than I am so we didn't get powder as finely ground as commercial but it was scrumptious none the less.

Keep it in a jar in the fridge - did you know that "shaky cheese" parmesan lids fit on standard mouth mason jars?

Presto! Your own shaky cheese.

3.) Pop popcorn and add melted butter or oil (unless you pop it in oil on the stovetop and then proceed) and shake your cheese powder on it.

Salt to taste.

4.) Enjoy!

We like to "dry can" popcorn - we dry it out in the oven and put it into jars while it's still hot.

We then tightly lid the jars which seal themselves as the popcorn cools keeping the popcorn fresh and crispy until opened.
