January No Spend Month - Week Four and Final

-

January 2017
No Spend Month
How our family is spent as little as possible this month.

We spent $20 a week on food, fun, and frivolities. We used up what we had, bought few essentials, and lived well.

Here are the glory details of Week Four and Four and a half!

WIP Wednesday - Harvest

-

Creating is my passion, my sanity, my sense of being "up to something", my way of contributing a little bit. I always have a few projects going, many left to the side for months or even years before I pick up the best and carry on. Here's some of what I'm working on this week:

Ten Things for September - 2016

-

As September comes to a close, I find myself settling into fall. It always feels like coming home. The stifling heat and biting insects have gone. The afternoon sunshine invites a cup of tea, and the cool evenings welcome blankets and silk scarves.

September is slowly becoming one of my favorite months of the year and leads into several months of celebrations and beauty.

What's bringing me joy:

1.) New strings on my guitar (thanks to my dad for stringing) - the shiny new strings and fresh clean sound is a welcome break from the old strings (one broken) that lingered for many months longer than were lovely to play.

2.) Apples. I've never understood buying apples in April, either trucked in from far away or, more likely, refrigerated since the fall. It's finally apple season. Apple picking, drying, saucing, canning, eating, peeler/slicer/corers, and trips to the orchard.

Extra Together-days.

-

Last week my husband took a few days off. *GASP* Apparently, he can actually survive a bit of downtime. Because of all the extra hours he's put in over the past months, he only had to take one day of leave for us to have the whole week together. That means he'll HAVE to take more time off soon. Oh darn.

We definitely didn't just lay around.

We designed, built, stained, and hung a new mantle.

Where I've been these last few weeks:

-

In the kitchen!

Between the beginning of fall harvest and the abundance of our farm-share, we have been keeping busy putting food by.

We've frozen: collards, kale, italian flat beans, green beans, peach slices, apple slices, raspberries, zucchini and summer squash slices, grated zucchini, loose-frozen thick grated summer squash, carrot tops, lime basil leaves, cilantro chutney and so much more!

We've canned salsa verde, peach salsa, tomato sauce, sliced peaches and apple butter. And boy! we're not done yet!

We also have seven jars of pickles fermenting and no end of our cucumber bounty in sight!

When there isn't anything left to pick outside we'll have plenty inside for the pickin's. We're still hoping to make apple chutney, at least three times more jars of tomatoes, green tomato relish, and possibly try our hand at fermented ketchup. And that's even before winter squashes ripen.

We have our first fledgling efforts at root-cellaring with beets packed in sawdust and hope to get carrots, parsnips, turnips/rutabagas and more.

When canning, I'm always thankful when the amounts don't quite match up to the jars and there's a bit that just HAS to be eaten right away.

Zucchini Flour - how to make it and a couple of recipes!

 -

It's zucchini season everyone! Yes, I'm still excited. I've processed more than 30lbs and have more to go, and more on the way!

Over the years I've tried freezing, dehydrating, drying, dry canning homemade zucchini chips, making zukenoodles (zucchini noodles), and I have a recipe for zucchini relish I may try this year.

What's really exciting though, is zucchini flour!

6 Tips for Solo Parenting with Toddlers

-

Six (Media Free) Tips for Solo Parenting with Toddlers

Solo parenting (not to be confused with single parenting) is when one parent is gone for a period of time, often due to work trips.

Military families (like ours) experience this often - between trainings, regular drill weekends, long schools, and deployments. Add in work trips for weekday jobs and there's lots of time when one parent is flying solo.

Here are some tips for getting through. These also work for older kids,  difficult days, or when your spouse is home:

1.) Get them outside and active

Even if it's just a tiny toddler playscape, let them burn off big energy outdoors.
